Knights Templar Linked to the Narragansett Rune Stone Markings

Scott Wolter, a Minnesota forensic geologist who examined the Narragansett Rune Stone on Monday, gave a presentation at Town Hall Tuesday that traced the appearance of the stone’s “hooked X” symbol through the centuries, following the travels of the Knights Templar.

He said the mysterious stone, which was found off Pojac Point in 1984, contains symbols that link it to the secret society whose members believe Jesus and Mary Magdalene had children. And he maintained that it must be protected for future scholars to study.

Wolter, who is host of the History Channel’s H2 show “America Unearthed,” also said that the town could profit by putting it on display to attract people intrigued by the possibility that it is evidence of exploration and land claims before the time of Christopher Columbus.

He traced the appearance of the hooked X symbol, which is the first symbol on the second line of the stone, 6 tons and 7 feet long, that is being kept at the Narragansett Bay campus of the University of Rhode Island to a charter in 1128 for the Knights Templar, a medieval military order.

The Town Council has agreed that the stone should be displayed in Updike Park in Wickford.

He showed how the hooked X was a reference to the Cross of Lorraine, a slanted cross with one shorter and one longer crossbar. (The Cross of Lorraine can be seen above the oval in the Nabisco logo and on the Oreo cookie, in the logo for the American Lung Association and in the way Exxon is rendered with the two Xs joined.)
The Cross of Lorraine, Wolter said, is a symbol for the bloodline families. It depicts Christ on the cross and the sign at the top that mocked him.

In speaking of the Templars exploring North America, he said the Native Americans wiped out the Vikings in the 1200s, when they “didn’t bother to appreciate the Native American way of life.”The Templars, however, interacted with the original people, he said. Wolter believes they shared blood and rituals.

The Templars were monotheistic and practiced a religion called dualism, the concept of opposites, such as male and female, light and dark, heaven and earth. When they were unsuccessful in aligning with the Roman Church in Europe, they turned to their backup plan, America, where they had already started the strategic alliances with the Native American tribes, Wolter said.
Missionaries who came to Canada reported the Native Americans “were doing those rituals when we got here,” which means, Wolter said, either that the rituals were developed simultaneously on two continents, or: “There was contact.

”He also tied in the Newport Tower, a stone structure in Newport’s Touro Park, whose origin has been the source of speculation that it is evidence of Europeans before Columbus. He showed how a line, established by the winter solstice at 9 a.m. and falling on the egg-shaped keystone in the Newport Tower, can be extended straight out to the Kensington Rune Stone in Minnesota, which he believes is a land claim stone left by the Knights Templar. During the presentation,

Wolter speculated on Everett Brown’s reason for saying he carved the Narragansett Rune Stone in 1964. Maybe he was philosophically opposed to what the Templars stand for, Wolter offered, or looking for attention.Wolter has said that he believes the carvings are at least 100 years old. After the presentation, Council President Elizabeth Dolan said she thought the possibilities about the origin of the markings were amazing. “We have to make sure we preserve this correctly,” she said.Council member Kerry McKay said that, regardless of his position about the Knights Templar or whether the inscription is real, “it’s such a great story.”

The whole Columbus-discovered-America story “can be turned on its ear right here in North Kingstown, R.I.”
